Osteoporotic Bone Fractures Are Common, Costly and Preventable

The Biden-Harris Administration has a tremendous opportunity to save lives and reduce health care costs simply by taking administrative action to incentivize more widespread adoption and use of existing strategies, which have been highly effective in preventing these fractures.

We recently contacted Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, newly appointed Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator, Elizabeth Fowler, newly appointed CMS Deputy Administrator, and Dr. Rochelle Walensky, newly appointed Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The purpose was to share the results of a major new set of reports, just released from the independent actuarial firm Milliman, showcasing huge Medicare costs and substantial racial and geographic disparities associated with osteoporotic fractures and to request a meeting to discuss strategies to bring needed change.
